Why We Love Owens Corning

When it comes to your roof, you want to be sure that you have the best system possible and that it performs to its maximum ability. For that reason, we use Owens Corning for our roofing materials.

Why Do We Use Owens Corning?

Owens Corning is a big, reputable company, with over 20,000 employees worldwide and annual revenues of over $7 billion. Thanks to this, Owens Corning offers some of the best quality materials for their roofing and offers one of the industry’s best warranty programs for your roof.

Their roofing features a system of layers that helps your roof perform in three critical ways: sealing, defending, and breathing.

Sealing

Sealing helps create a waterproof barrier. Proper sealing does more than just stop the rain from entering your home. It also blocks the slow drips of water that often lead to rot and mold. A waterproof barrier also protects a roof from water that collects in the valleys, vents, skylights, and near the chimney. Good sealing can also prevent the formation of ice dams, which are ridges that form when water freezes on a roof.

Defending

Defending your roof and home against the outdoor elements is a hard job. The wind whipped up in storms can destroy a roof. You’ve probably seen this after a storm in the shingles thrown around the yard. However, it’s steady breezes and occasional wind gusts that place the biggest stress on shingles. An Owens Corning roof defends against these shingle blow-offs, as well as the water infiltration that occurs in the eaves and peaks.

Breathing

Every roof needs to be able the breathe, or in other ways, have some sort of ventilation system. There should always be a consistent flow of air to guard against heat and moisture buildup. Intake vents bring fresh air into the attic and exhaust vents move it out. A roofing expert will help you determine the perfect blend for your roof.

Benefits Of Owens Corning

High Quality

Owens Corning shingles are known for their high quality because of the materials that are used and the process in which they are made.

These shingles are layered with:

  • Patented Fiberglass: This protects against the elements and has a class A fire-resistance rating.
  • Asphalt: This layer creates a barrier to protect from water damage.
  • Reflective Granules: These are to minimize the effect of the sun’s rays.
  • Adhesive Strips: This keeps the whole roof watertight.

Algae Resistance

Your roof needs to be able to withstand contact rains and humid temperatures that can cause algae to grow on shingles. When this happens, the algae creates discoloration and streaks on the roof. This fosters decay. Owens Corning shingles are created with materials that are algae resistant to protect your roof and your home.

Wind Resistance

Once shingles are installed with Owens Corning sealant, they are able to withstand up to 130 mph winds. This reduces the chances of missing shingles during a storm, which can lead to water damage in your home.

Bold Colors

Curb appeal is important if you are selling your home, and when you are living there, too. Your guests, friends, and family will notice how vibrant and beautiful your home is from the curb. When you are picking out colors and shades, you have a wide and varied selection to find the right match for your home. The color for 2021 is “aged copper” and is a wonderful look!

Owens Corning Roofing Warranties

With the strength, history, and reputation of Owens Corning standing guard over your home’s roof, you have four levels of warranty protection available. You can opt for the standard protection or any of three levels of extended coverage for your shingle roof:

  1. Standard Product Limited Warranty
  2. System Protection
  3. Preferred Protection

Your warranty can be transferred once if you sell your home. Each warranty offers excellent coverage for your new roof.

Before we examine each warranty, these five areas are common to all warranties:

  • TRU PROtection®

The warranty starts with a TRU PROtection® Period during the initial years. During the time the coverage includes the cost of labor to repair or replace defective materials.

  • Materials-only coverage

After the TRU PROtection® Period is over, the warranty compensates for materials only; compensation is pro-rated; it is reduced based on the number of years you have your roof from installation date through the date of your warranty claim.

  • Blow-off coverage

110 mph up to 130 mph wind blow-off coverage; after your shingles thermally seal, Owens Corning will cover you if the shingles blow off or winds damage your roof within the wind speeds indicated.

  • StreakGuard™ Algae Resistance

This is the length of your warranty, following the date of installation, ensuring against brown-black staining caused by the growth of cyanobacteria Gloeocapsa magma algae.

  • Workmanship Coverage

This provides contractor workmanship coverage and includes any defective installation of the Owens Corning® Roofing System; contractor workmanship is available only through certified Owens Corning® Roofing Platinum or Preferred Contractors.

Standard Product Limited Warranty

This warranty level is good for the lifetime of your roof. You get TRU PROtection for the first 10 years, materials-only coverage after the first 10 years, blow-off coverage for 15 years, and StreakGuard™ Algae Resistance for the first 10 years.

With this basic protection, you get no coverage for workmanship, you must use any three Owens Corning roofing products, and you don’t need to have a certified contractor. This warranty comes at no additional cost to you; it is part of your costs of the roofing materials.

If you know you will not occupy your house for more than a few years, or if you are building an addition, outbuilding, or temporary residence, this may be a good plan for you.

System Protection

A step up from the standard protection is the first level of extended warranty coverage. This warranty, the System Protection Limited Warranty, is good for the lifetime of your shingle roof. It covers all Owens Corning roofing products.

The length of the TRU PROtection® period is drastically longer than under the standard plan: 50 years. Materials-only coverage begins after 50 years. Blow-off protection is for 15 years; algae protection is for the first 10 years.

Like the standard warranty, System Protection provides no coverage for workmanship costs, and it requires three Owens Corning components on your roof. Unlike the standard coverage, it has an additional cost and must be installed by an Owens Corning® Platinum or Preferred Contractor.

Preferred Protection

With the Preferred Protection Limited Warranty, you get all the features of the System Protection warranty, but you also add workmanship coverage for the first 10 years of your roof’s service. You need a minimum of four Owens Corning roofing components and you pay an additional cost for this level of protection.
